Frankie's Woodland Friends

Here's another baby quilt I made in 2017, this one for my great nephew, Frankie. I blurred out Frankie's unique middle name for privacy reasons.

Most of the animals are from the pattern Woodland Critters by Shiny Happy World.

I added the turtle (for the book character Franklin) and a cardinal at mom's request.

I don't do machine appliqué often, but I did enjoy the process. I worked on one block at a time, adding to the design wall as I went.

I did not quilt-as-you-go as suggested in the pattern.

I love how Wendi's creatures have such character.

Safari Baby Quilt

In honor of Julia being on expedition to the Serengeti, the safari baby quilt has been completed.

In this post from a couple of weeks ago, I described the panels and how they were sashed and pieced together. I used another panel and coordinating prints on the back.

For the quilting, I decided to mimic the shape of the flag garlands in the border print.  I marked a 2.5" square grid across the entire quilt top to guide the swoops. You can clearly see that the quilting was done by hand (on my Bernina) and not computer driven. Imperfections are good, right?

I had the hardest time cleaning off the chalk I used to mark the grid. I used everything imaginable, and I can still see some lines on the pink border print. The quilt is so crinkly because it has been washed at least 4 times already!

I had fun with the zebra stripes in the sashing and binding.
That lion is just the cutest!

OK, maybe this lion is the cutest!

Welcome, Olivia!

My fourth grand-niece was born last week. Isn't Olivia so sweet?

Olivia's baby quilt is now ready to go. I used a really sweet jelly roll (Birdie by Me and My Sister Designs for Moda), Kona white and the Whirlygig pattern by Amelie Scott Designs. The quilt measured 48" x 60" before washing, about 45" x 57" after.

I've seen a quilting pattern similar to this a bunch of times online, so I drew it out on paper before I started. I wanted a loose design, so I started out really big. As you can see, I tightened up significantly as I made my way around the quilt.

See the tiny flowers in the center and giant flowers at the edge?

I used one extra block and some extra strips to make the back wide enough.

More jelly roll strips became the binding.  I bordered the label with some leftover binding.

I had saved all the lighter strips for the binding, and I thought they needed some help. I think the bright pink ric rac did the trick.

This week was big sister Abby's 2nd birthday. She loves playing in her toy kitchen, so I made her a cute new apron.

Giant dots on the front, tiny dots on the back. I followed this tutorial by Yards and Yards.

I'll be linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts' Finish it up Friday and Pat Sloan's Show & Tell.

WIP Wednesday- SNOW DAY!

Well, my guild meeting (including my lecture on Modern Quilting) scheduled for tonight was snowed out. I'm hoping a snow day will translate into lots of sewing! My lecture is being bumped to next month which will give me time to get some of the pieces quilted, so I won't be showing only tops. It's all good.

I have been working on a Whirlygig baby quilt for a couple of days. I started out with the inspiration print below from the line Savannah by Christine Graf for Clothworks. I like it just fine and it would be lovely as a baby quilt. (As a side note, we met my nephew's girlfriend Savannah last week, so I'm saving the selvages to make a little something for her.)

Then this Philip Jacobs print, Waltzing Matilda, appeared on the table and I love it even more. So I cut some pinks and pulled out the blue. I think it could use some green. We'll see where this ends up!
Which do you like better? Savannah or Matilda?

It's been snowing since about midnight and is expected to continue into the afternoon. This is the most snow we've had in one storm so far this season.

I love snow!
Kona Snow, that is!
It is a gorgeous soft white and it works with everything.
Who knew I could love a solid white so much?!

Baby Shower Crafts

I've spent the last two days making fun stuff for my niece's baby shower. I'm almost positive she doesn't read my bog. (I have another niece who drops by from time to time. Hi, Katie!)

Julia made 24 chocolate-covered Oreos for favors. My mother, the happy Great-Grandmother, helped tie on the little pacifiers and bows.

There are people in my family who don't understand this crafty obsession and will think this corsage is ridiculous. But come on, how cute is this? (If she won't wear it, at least it looks good on the basket.)

I had seen some baby wreaths online, but I can't remember where, so I had to make it up as I went along. (I thought Jodi made one, but I can't find it.) I wrapped and scrunched washcloths around a styrofoam ring, pinned into the back. Cute baby socks are rolled into roses. I added a brush, a binkie and a bow. Cute now, useful later!

Then I had to make a pennant banner because everyone is doing it! A few sheets of scrapbook paper, some awesome ric-rac, some cutting, gluing, and stitching. Easy peasy!

We can't wait to see the Mom- and Dad-to-be and the rest of my family this weekend!

Finally, a Finish

This is what you get when you ask a goofy 14 year old boy to hold a quilt for you!
It's my first finish in a while: a baby quilt for one of Bill's co-workers.

The fabric is One the Go by Jill Webster for Clothworks.
The new parents had chosen a transportation theme for the nursery in blues and browns.

I was good with transportation, but I'm crazy for orange right now!
Simple piecing, simple quilting.
I hope they like it.

Go, Baby, Go!
