Thanks Kate and a Giveaway!

I can't thank Kate Spain enough for posting about my wedding ring star quilt! All the comments have been so flattering and fun, and I'm trying really hard to not let it go to my head.

So for all of my new visitors, I thought I should share more about this Work in Progress.
(I got into more detail than I planned so you might want to skip down to the giveaway!)

My nephew married his long-time girlfriend last March. As soon as they got engaged, Christopher, Jamie and I started to plan their wedding quilt. When two of my nieces got married in 2004, my mother and I made quilts for them, which you can see here. The precedence had been set!

It was easy to select a pattern. It had to be a wedding ring! Jamie liked the Wedding Ring Star with an applique border. I highly recommend Judy Niemeyer patterns. They go together like a dream.

The three of us went browsing on the Fat Quarter Shop website to see what collections appealed to them. The couple picked a few of their favorites. Julia and I took that list with us to the Lowell Quilt Festival in August 2010, hoping to find most of the fabric in person at the vendors. We found a few layer cakes from the list and Fandango by Kate Spain was our favorite. We bought the layer cake and used those pieces to decide on fabric placement so I could buy the yardage needed.

OK, skip ahead several months. All that was done for Jamie's shower was 2 blocks (and a printed mock up of the top) and a couple of pillowcases.

Skip ahead to where things stand now. All the fabric is cut, and I have the pieces lined up on this big plastic tray, ready to go.

Here's one block with the border and binding fabrics. I'm using Kona Snow (oh, how I love Kona Snow) for the background of the blocks and the applique border. Then there will be a wide border of the brown print. The green will be used for applique stems and binding.

I need to make a total of 49 blocks, which I didn't want to piece all at once and risk messing them all up. I can comfortably work on about 16 at a time, and move the pieces I need to this smaller tray.

16 blocks done, 33 blocks to go!

I noticed last week that I was approaching 100 followers and I would need to have a giveaway. It looks like the link from Kate might get me to 100 today!

I just ran down to my LQS for some fat quarters of Fandango for 2 lucky winners. I'll also throw in something handmade, like a keychain lanyard or a seasonal paper-pieced lapel pin, to be made later today.

To enter, leave a comment telling me which colorway you like better, pink or green. Then tell us if you've ever made a wedding quilt for someone. I'll pick two random winners on Monday morning.

Good Luck! And thanks again, Kate!

  3. I saw your quilt featured on Kate's site - how cool for you! It really is a beautiful quilt! And I hope you DO get to 100 today! How fun - thanks for the chance at a lovely give-away!! Tho I'm usually a 'cool' person, I really love the orange in this line. And yes, I've made a wedding ring quilt for my niece and several table toppers of the 'wedding star' - I'm sure your finished quilt will be a stunner!

  4. I love the wedding star design.. It's kind of funny, because I've been planning to make a wedding quilt for my husband and myself (we finally walked down the aisle 6 months ago, after 11 years!) and was thinking about doing a DWR or maybe the blazing star, and you have a design that incorporates both!

And I think the green fabrics are divine. :) I'm a new follower of yours, I found and started following you earlier today after reading Kate's post about your quilt :)

  11. That quilt is amazing so far and the finish is going to be exquisite. I have never made a wedding quilt but what a treasure this will be. Congrats on nearly 100 followers. I love both colourways but would go for the pink if my number is lucky.

  12. All I can say is WOW! I love Kate Spain and your quilt is absolutely stunning. I actually have 2 wedding quilts to make and my patterns may get changed after seeing your quilt. As for the colorway, I'm partial to reds so I like the pink colorway. So excited to have found your blog also. Plus, love your name...

  13. No, not yet..but looking at yours is giving me incentive to try. It is so different from the wedding ring quilts i have seen before and it such a clever idea to use a progression or an overall effect that is quite sublime. Thanks for sharing I'm certainly glad I had a chance to see the workings of it. I'd love either colourway but green would be first choice, thankyou!!

  19. What amazing wedding ring blocks! Lucky couple (:
I have never made one and am not sure I ever will. It looks so complicated!
I would definitely go for the green lot, even though pink is my favorite color. Maybe my computer doesn't show how pretty the pink ones are.
    Have a lovely day!

  21. I found your blog via Kate Spain's blog, and have added you to my BlogLovin. If you haven't seen BlogLoving.com it is a beautiful way to read all your blogs. I have SEW many quilting blogs on my list <3 :)

This summer my friend and I made a quilt in two weeks for our friends wedding. TWO WEEKS! Two sewers! It was madness and delightful, and the batik quilt was a huge hit. You can see it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/liveformemories/sets/72157627042871027/

I adore Kate's prints and am so excited she just announced her newest line to launch in January!

  24. I love the green fabric. A few years ago I started a wedding quilt in blue and white, but I've never finished it. It is on my bucket list :-) Thanks so much for the fabulous giveaway!

  25. I LOVE the green! I've never made a wedding ring quilt but have wanted to make one(for my husband) since we got engaged! I think you've just inspired me to start!

    Thaks!

  28. Oh my, this is going to be one beautiful quilt. I have made many wedding quilts and the first one I made was for my son, who has been married for 14 years, and it was a double wedding ring. It was a lot of work but really nice. I must tell you that I have been hoarding Fandango for quite some time waiting for my other son to pop the question cause his girlfriend loves this fabric too. Pink would be great but so would green. Thanks

  29. This quilt is unbelievable! And my favorite is the green. Never made a wedding quilt but I did make a baby quilt this year using Fandango!!

  30. Your quilt is stunning! I saw it the other day on WIP Wed but didn't get a chance to comment, sorry about that. I have never made a wedding quilt, I have only made 2 quilts so far in my life. Maybe in the future, like when my sons or daughter get married. By then I should have 20+ years of quilting under my belt. :) I love both colors, but if I had to chose, I like the green a little bit more I guess. Thanks for the giveaway!

  31. Hi! Your work is amazing. I like the green colorway. I haven't been quilting long but I think it would be really cool to make a wedding quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like the pink.

I've never made a wedding quilt and I am stunned by yours. It is beautiful. It is interesting to note that you can work on 16 blocks at a time and keep everything straight. I bet it will be simple fabulous when it's finished.

  33. The quilt is going to be awesome! I have made quilts as wedding gifts before, I was even going to attempt to make a Double Wedding Rings quilt, that idea went as far as making 4 of the arc sections (or 8, however you look at it). I ended up only making a wall hanging with them. And I have never tried again. Yet! I like the green colorway best! Thanks for the giveaway.

  34. Kate Spain is by far my favorite Moda designer. Her designs are so well thought out. And your blocks are stunning. I have been following you with reader for a while. And now you are a celebrity. Very cool.

  35. I'm another new follower...I was on Kate Spain's blog and WOW there was your quilt. WOW was all I could say. Combination of fabrics, placement and pattern, it's just so beautiful. I'm a beginner quilter so seeing your quilt has inspired me for sure. It's going on my to-do someday list. No I have not made a wedding quilt yet. My brother got married last year so I'd like to make them one but maybe on their five year anniversary. lol. Thanks for the giveaway and I'm liking the pink color. The green is also nice so I'd be happy either way.

  36. What a beautiful wedding quilt!! I love the block she selected and the fabrics are wonderful!! I actually just recently bought 6 FQs of Fandango (so don't include me in the great giveawway). It's hard to choose a preferred colorway since they go so well together. It looks great with the yellow you added in the quilt. Congrats on the 100-followeer milestone!

  37. What a spectacular quilt -- I love your color placement. I think I like the green colorway the best. Good luck to you.

  38. Your quilt is beautiful and I am more inclined to pick the blue fabric over the pink. Thanks!

  39. WOW! What a beautiful wedding quilt. It will be treasured for years along with the memories Christopher and Jamie will have selecting the fabric with you. I like both color ways but I would lean more to the pink. Thanks for the giveaway.

  40. I love the pattern. I really like the pink fabric since they are so bright.

  41. I love your quilt, the colours are so beautiful! They are a lucky couple to be receiving such a wonderful gift. I am not brave enough to try making a wedding ring quilt yet... maybe one day! I love the green colourway best.

  42. That is a fabulous quilt. Great fabric and design. How fortunate is your nephew and his bride! I like the green colorway. I've not made a wedding quilt, but maybe need to try it one day. Thanks for the inspiration.

  43. The quilt is going to be breath taking. I adore the pattern.
As for the colorways, I'll just have to go with today's mood (it changes every time I try to decide on fabric) and say the green. But truly, I would love either one. I have only been quilting for a little over 3 years and one of those was lost to health problems, so I've never made a wedding quilt, BUT...the oldest of the two grandsons we raised seems to be inching closer to popping the question now that he is settled into a good career in the Air Force, so I'm thinking I'll be making my very first wedding quilt in the near future. Thank you for the giveaway and congratulations on reaching over 100 followers! Big Hugs...

  44. I love your quilt and have become a follower, looking forward to reading more about your quilting adventures. The give away is lovely, I love Fandango and both colourways. I would likely pick the orange/pink if I had to.

  45. love all of Kate's fabrics...and she is a nice person to boot (even thought I have never actually met her in person). Living in Fl, of course I like (love) pink and green together. Gun to head, if I HAD to make a choice, I'd go with green.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Beautiful quilt. I love the colors that you used! As for the giveaway, I'm usually a pink girl, but I love the green in this collection. Good luck finishing the quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like that quilt! The colors and star give it a really unique look.

Ooooh, green fabric...love that. Nope, I've never made a wedding quilt. I've designed and cross-stitched a couple of wedding samplers, but so far haven't done a quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's such a wonderful quilt!! I like the green colorway best. And I haven't made a wedding ring quilt before, but I may now!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've poped over from Kates site as well :)
That quilt is going to be blinking awesome!! Just wow!!! Curved seams put the fear in my spine so I haven't tried one yet but I did go over to Judy Niemeyer patterns and fell in love with some of them so I'd better get practicing!
The green colour way is very soothing green so I would say that it's the prettiest :)

  50. I saw your quilt on Kate's site and hope to someday have the courage to try something like this. Yours is so beautiful. I have never made a wedding quilt but hope to have at least 15 years before either of my kids need one. I would usually say I prefer the pink but the greens are so beautiful I'll have to say green this time.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I am here from Kate's blog too...Love the wedding quilt you are doing with Fandango. I have never made a wedding quilt because all my friends were already married by the time I started quilting! As far as the colors...I vote GREEN!! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  52. OMG! What a beautiful, beautiful quilt! The color placement, the fabrics are so perfect. I'm so happy Kate Spain gave you a shout out directed us to your blog. I'm a new follower. Even though I have been quilting for many years, I'm new to reading blogs. I didn't know what I was missing! haha. I have not made a wedding quilt yet. Maybe I'm intimidated, I'm not sure. It's on my quilt bucket list though.

Thanks for the giveaway and a chance to win. Both colors are beautiful. I have less pink in my stash so I'll say pink.
